There is always something new being posted on Facebook about Sub Rosa Spirits.

The Nibble.com wrote about Magically Flavored Vodka From Sub Rosa Spirits in December 2010.

WHY WE LOVE IT: "The flavors are brilliant, an epiphany of how good flavored spirits can be. And perhaps that makes Sub Rosa the best vodkas we’ve ever had."

Tarragon Vodka
"There is something startling about drinking the Tarragon Vodka. You don’t expect a glass of vodka to have such garden flavor. Certainly, no vodka cocktail we’ve ever had has rung so true." "...thinking that if Mother Nature opened a distillery, this would be one of her first products."

Saffron Vodka
"Just when we thought things couldn’t possibly get better, we tasted Sub Rosa Saffron Vodka, a natural pale gold color. Where Tarragon Vodka is bursting with fresh herb flavor, Saffron Vodka is a different kind of explosion entirely."

For the second time in two years Sub Rosa Spirits received two more Gold Medals. The Saffron vodka received 93 this time and the Tarragon vodka received 90 points again. Beverage Testing Institute International Spirits Review. November 2010.

Sub Rosa Saffron vodka: Light yellow green color. Aromas and flavors of anise, saffron, coriander, cumin with a supple, zesty fruity-yet-dry medium-to-full body with dried grapefruit peel, honey, pink peppercorn, and lavender talc notes on the long, spicy finish. Very exotic and flavorful, will make stimulating cocktails.

Sub Rosa Tarragon: Faint straw green color. Bright tarragon, fennel, and dusty oregano aromas and flavors with a supple, off-dry medium body and a pink peppercorn, honey, and talc finish. A lively and clever flavored vodka for adventuresome cocktails.

Sub Rosa Spirits received two Gold Medals calling our products "exceptional".    The Saffron vodka received 91 and the Tarragon vodka received 90 points. Ya gotta love it when people recognize something truly unique. Beverage Testing Institute International Spirits Review. November 2009.

Sub Rosa Saffron vodka
: Pale straw green color. Vivid aromas of yellow curry powder and saffron follow through on a round, supple entry to a dryish medium body with raisin date chutney, cardamom, turmeric, and exotic peppercorn notes. Finishes with long, curry, mineral, and pepper jelly fade. A unique flavored vodka to experiment with is exotic Asian influenced fruity and savory cocktails; or try as a substitute for gin.

Sub Rosa Tarragon vodka: Pale silvery green color. Bright aromas of fresh tarragon jump from the glass and have a nice creamy mint quality and follow through on a supple, silky entry with pine cone and anise seed notes. Finishes with an interesting spiced nuances on the anise cookie dough fade.

This Bourbon Blog podcast was recorded in January of 2010. "An interview with Oregon distiller Mike Sherwood, a Renaissance man that was inspired to bring the first ever spirit with toasted cumin, coriander and natural saffron to the market in his Saffron Vodka. Both the Indian/Asian themed Saffron Vodka and his Tarragon Vodka are catching the attention of taste buds of those who desire something beyond unique."

Spirits: Drink Fresh
Beer, wine, spirits—you name it, Michael Sherwood can brew, ferment, or distill it. Sherwood, a 55-year-old former logger, fisherman, and software developer, was the founding executive director of the Oregon Brewers Guild in the 1990s. He now works in the cellar of the Sineann winery in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, and when he’s not working the harvest or topping off barrels, he distills small batches of what he calls culinary inspired spirits for his Sub Rosa Spirits brand. "Most flavored vodkas are sweet and fruity," says Sherwood. "But no one was making intensely flavored elixirs with a dry, crisp, and savory taste." Robb Report - February 2009...

Sub Rosa Spirits: Oregon's Secret Is Out Of The Bag
"For those looking for distinctive flavor, Sub Rosa Spirits out of Oregon is working on the perfect infusions for your taste buds using Tarragon and Saffron. From the short look around their site, it looks like there is something special happening in Oregon", writes Cheri Loughlin in her nifty liquor blog - The Intoxicologist. January 25, 2009...

Entering The Spirits World
“By sampling our elixirs, you become part of the cadre, the insiders to a secret world.” I have to admit, when I read this mantra of Sub Rosa Spirits, I was intrigued. I’ve seen and read the “Da Vinci Code,” and know a little bit about ancient secret societies, so I figured I’d do my own investigation into this mystical spirit world. Jamie Boudreau, cocktail whisperer and bartender in Seattle liked them a lot :  "Since the bottles say that they are vodka, I guess I've got to believe it, but I'd want to give these spirits a different classification altogether, as they are that unique." from his Spirits and Cocktail blog. more...

Web blog Slashfoods said this about the Tarragon vodka:  "It is delightfully spicy and complex with that unmistakable smell of fresh tarragon and hints of the fennel and mint, combined with herbaceous and floral notes, with a hint of musk.  This is an unusual and compelling infused vodka, unlike any you may have tried before. It is actually in a class by itself, more grown up, refined, and savory, not sweet." more...

Slashfoods had this to say about the Saffron vodka:  "The taste is bright and bold with the spices dancing along your tongue. Cumin, coriander, the two cousins galangal and ginger, black pepper and hot cayenne pepper showing bare hints, a hint of turmeric, and floral notes from the saffron. In some ways this is like a gin, taken to the extreme, but with none of gins sharp notes, instead replacing them wit warm and dusky ones." more...

Sub Rosa Spirits Is Taking Vodka Infusion to a New Level
Portland Mercury's Patrick Coleman writes, "The saffron vodka is a masterly concoction of eight spices with notes of cumin and coriander as well as fragrant overtones of saffron. It's quite spicy, inspired by curry, and when stirred with mango nectar it develops on the palate like a hard mango lassi." August 21, 2008...

Infused Spirits from Sub Rosa Spirits
Straight Up Cocktails and Spirits

"Here at The Kitchn, we’ve talked a lot about the welcome new “culinary” approach to cocktail-making. About the growing interest in cooking up homemade syrups and garnishes, in juicing fresh, seasonal fruits, and about the enjoyable practice of flavoring alcohol by infusion at home. This week we’re continuing this trend by looking at some delicious handcrafted tarragon- and saffron-infused vodkas."

Sub Rosa Spirits Labels Cause Controversy
Sub Rosa Spirits is a distillery with a wry sense of humor and the petulance of a cocky young buck. Their clever use of Latin and banned words caused the Feds a little heartburn in the label approval process. Spirits: Flower power wakes up cocktails
Jacqueline Patterson, bar manager of Orson in San Francisco is not alone in using flowers and flower-based spirits in cocktails. "I'm always driven by my nose," she says.
